Joining In: The 2012 Science Fiction Experience

The 2012 Science Fiction Experience is not a challenge, it is an experience. Hosted by Carl V. of Stainless Steel Droppings, this will basically be two months worth of discussions about science fiction that will go from January 1st through February 29, 2012.

Carl is making this experience fun and I think cool! I love that the discussions include science fiction books, movies and television shows watched. I'm looking forward to not only reading some books that I've accumulated, but hopefully joining in on some of the discussions. Hopefully, I will gather a great list of titles for future reading too!

I'm not sure which books I'll read yet. These are the books that I already own and that are in my list of possible reads:

However, I do have a few others! We'll see.

I'll be keeping my list of books read at the bottom of this post.
Wish me luck!

  2. Seconded! I have CRAZY love for the Vorkosigan books. Seriously.

The Warrior's Apprentice is a great one to start with. Though I think I started with Shards of Honour, which arguably is the "correct" first book.

  3. Good luck! I haven't read the Bujold series, but I have a friend who is a huge fan!

  6. Victoria! I've read a couple of the short stories (out of series) for the Vorkosigan series (Mountains of Mourning, Labyrinth) and it really looks to be like a great series. Thanks for the recommendation!
LOL, I really wanted to try Scalzi's first works too... maybe I'll do both.

Li, thank you! I thought Warrior's Apprentice WAS the first book. I have to re-check the order again, that's the book I was going to read first. :) Thanks for the heads up!

Orannia, I've heard so much about this series, and read a couple of the shorter stories, it looks great! I'm looking forward to reading it. (I still haven't made up my mind, though).

Alex, Nath, thanks for wishing me luck! I really do need it. *g*

  7. I'm another vote for the Vorkosigan series because I love, love, love it! Shards of Honour is the first book, and, for what it's worth, I think it's the best place to begin.

  8. The SHARDS OF HONOR / WARRIOR'S APPRENTICE debate :-)

I admit I actually started with Shards, but tend to suggest Warrior's Apprentice to others, which is an alternative starting point - mainly because I did not fall in love with the Vorkosigan books until Warrior's Apprentice!

Hils - FWIW, Shards/Barrayar is Miles' parents story, they play a large part in the series and their books cover pivotal events, but Miles really carries most of the other books and Warrior's Apprentice is when we get to meet him. Either way would work really... but if you start with Shards, you have to promise to continue reading until Warrior's Apprentice!

  9. Mary Beth, thanks for that vote! And thank you for clarifying which book comes first in the sequence too. I have all the books, so that's no problem.

Li, that explains a lot! I think a lot of people list The Warrior's Apprentice as their first book read in the series. Interesting. I will probably begin with Shards/Barrayar, but don't worry I know I'll get to TWA. I already love Miles! I fell for him a few years ago when I read the short story The Mountains of Mourning out of sequence to get a "taste" of the series. :)

  10. Oh fun! I've joined Carl's Once Upon a Time Reading Challenge in the last two years--he puts together some really great "programs." Have fun with this experience, Hils!

As for the sci fi reading, I just got a rec from a twitter friend to read Bujold's book Cordelia's Honor. I thought it was the first in the Vorkosigan Saga? No?

  11. Christine, I'm having fun already. :)

Cordelia's Honor is the omnibus, and it contains Books 1 and 2 (Shards of Honor, Book 1 and Barrayar Book 2). So yes, you have the first two complete novels of the series. There is a short story "Falling Free" that is supposed to come before those two books. I have to check and see if I have it.
