On Reading, Romance and Vices

My first post.  I'm not here to review or even to post my impressions about a particular book today, I'm just here to introduce myself.  First and foremost I consider myself a reader.  I'm a curious reader and that curiosity has led me to discover and love different types of genres and authors.

Reading romance is one of the joys in my life.  I always say it's not a luxury, it's a necessity --well, it is for me.  I haven't been able to go a week without reading at least one Category Romance, if not a full length novel, since I was 10 years old and read my first one.  My brothers call it a vice -- I say, if I'm going to have a vice, could I have picked a better one? I don't think so.  For me, there's nothing like that wonderful feeling I get when reading the struggle two people go through to reach that happy ending.  I never get tired of going along for the ride as they get those first butterflies in the stomach, the sexual tension and hot moments, and the down and dirty, nitty gritty stuff it takes to get to know one another.  It's all about the love.

Of course, I enjoy more than Romance, although I won't deny if there's a healthy mix of it with my Science Fiction, Fantasy, Suspense or Mystery, I'll take it too!  But yes, I do love a good fantasy book that will take me away into another world, or a science fiction story that will have me traveling the galaxies and meeting unique and fantastically creepy characters.  I can't start a good mystery during the work week because I won't stop until I'm done and I find out "who-done-it," and I will chew up my nails while reading a good suspense.

I always wondered where this vice of mine would lead me.  Would I need a ten step program to help me quit?  Could I do it cold turkey?  I've never found out.  I'm one of those addicts that hasn't attempted to quit once -- yes a true addict, a happy one too.  So, where has it led me? I've rocketed through galaxies, discovered new frontiers, fallen in love and lust countless times, met the most amazing people and I'm still searching for more.  I'm insatiable.

We'll chat some more another time about reading, romance, galaxies and addiction.  In the meantime, for reviews you can always find me hanging with Brie at Musings of a Bibliophile.  See you there!

  1. Nice intro Hils!! And book addiction it nothing to be ashamed of - I never once considered quitting, either. I'll give up pretty much any other purchase before I give up books, the only exception being food (and not even because one need to eat to live, simply because I LOVE eating :-DDD)

Speaking of galaxies and science-fiction, have you seen Star Trek yet? I went yesterday (partly thanks to Kenda's enthusiastic post last week) and totally loved it. I know how a lot of the slash fanfiction (and our beloved M/M) originated in Kirk/Spock slash, so I was a tiny bit disappointed by the absolute lack of slashy opportunities in the movie, but I'll start scouting Star Trek fanfiction tonight, I think. Lol.

  2. Thanks, Mary!

I'm going to see Star Trek this weekend, you KNOW I wouldn't miss it. I'm a HUGE trekkie... now, you're going to have me looking for Kirk/Spock M/M slashy moments, lol! Not fair! :D
