Happy Thanksgiving and some Pamela Morsi Americana...

Tomorrow we will be celebrating Thanksgiving. I'm getting ready for my family get together tomorrow. Everyone in my family is going to be here. My brother is traveling from Florida, so all my brothers, their wives and children will be present this year. Nice! I just got home from work, but the cooking and baking are already underway. Of course we'll be having the traditional American meal of turkey with all the trimmings. It's a wonderful holiday, and I wish all of you celebrating tomorrow a Happy Thanksgiving with your families.

And because this blog is all about books and reading, I would like to follow that up with the nice surprise I had when I arrived home today. Last year I read and loved some excellent Americana historical romance. I fell in love with quite a few authors. One of those authors is Pamela Morsi. Well, I finally found some of her back list books, ordered them and they are here!

  • I loved, loved Simple Jess. It was my very first Pamela Morsi read (the way the same friend who sent me the Balogh books, introduced me to Ms. Morsi's works by sending me that book. Isn't she the best?). The Marrying Stone is the book that comes before Simple Jess in sequence and I've been wanting to read it for about a year now. It's the romance between Jess's sister Meg and Roe Farley. I can't wait to go back to Marrying Stone Mountain in the Osarks!
  • Here Comes the Bride is another book that I've had in my sights for about a year now. This is the romance between Augusta Mudd and Rome Akers and this one is set in a small town in Texas. The description of the book reminds me a little bit of Courting Miss Hattie (my very favorite Morsi read) and I can't wait to read it. :)
  • The Love Charm is another book I've had on my wish list for a long time. The setting alone sounds too intriguing to pass up. The story is set in19th Century Louisiana and the characters are Acadian. There seem to be a few romances going on at the same time in this story, but the main characters are Armand Sonnier and Aida Gaudet.

Sooo, I have lots of great books to read! I wonder which books will call to me in the next couple of weeks. Notice that all of them are historical romances. Interesting.

Besides Pamela Morsi, I enjoy works by Lavyrle Spencer and Cheryl St. John. How about you? Who is your favorite Americana historical romance writer?

  4. Thank you, Orannia. Hugs back!

Alex, this is a wonderful author. I envy you "discovering" her works. I had such a wonderful time reading her first couple of books. Courting Miss Hattie... [sigh].

  5. Happy Thanksgiving, Hils!!!
I wish you a wonderful holiday weekend with your family! I love that everyone is going to be in one place together. : )

I have Morning Glory by Lavyrle Spencer and Simple Jess by Pamela Morsi on my nightstand shelf ... thanks to both you and the same friend who sent you the Balogh books. ; ) I started Simple Jess one time--maybe a chapter, but got distracted. I am going to make a point to get to both of those books in 2012.

    Enjoy your books!

  6. Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving, Christine! And, a great weekend with your family too!

Oh, I do hope you get to Simple Jess, if not try Courting Miss Hattie by Ms. Morsi. Morning Glory! That's another treasure I think you'll enjoy when you're ready for it. I'll definitely enjoy these. :P

  7. How wonderful to have all of your family there. Hope you had a great turkey day!

Morsi has such a unique, beautiful style. You've got some great reads for the long weekend. :)

  8. I tend to classify Cheryl St. John as a "western" writer - but I think you're on to something here. She really is more in the vein of an Americana author - even if she sets her stories well west of the Mississippi :)

Let's see - I know I have Here Comes The Bride in the TBR. I *might* have The Marrying Stone. Definitely don't have The Love Charm.

If you can find it BTW - I highly endorse Wild Oats. Read that one last year, and it's a goodie!

  9. It's awesome that the whole family was there, Hils! Especially with all the health scares you've gotten! :) Hope you had a great time :) Did you venture out to shop?

  10. Leslie, we had a wonderful time! These are highly anticipated reads for me, so yeah. ;D

Wendy, Cheryl's works yes absolutely, they are classified as westerns, but for me some of them also have that Americana feel. So I couldn't help naming her too.

I have Wild Oats and Sweetwood Bride in my TBR already! I'm making room in my reading schedule for Americana again and these are reads I hope to get to in 2012. :)

  11. Nath, we loved having the whole family together for Thanksgiving. That doesn't happen every year. And NO, I didn't venture out to the shops! I kind of avoid them during this time of the year. I hate the crowds this weekend. LOL! But my sister in laws went for it. *g*

  12. Have you read The Charm School, by Susan Wiggs? It's set in 1850 or so and features a smart, but very plain heroine with no self-confidence who ends up getting a job as a translator on a ship voyage to Rio de Janeiro. Of course, she and the ship's captain fall in love. She's from Boston, he's from Virginia and there's also an abolitionist subplot running through it.

Another one that I just loved is Conor's Way by Laura Lee Gurhke. She normally writes Victorian set novels, but this one is set in Louisiana in 1870 and features a former plantation owner's daughter and an Irishman who fled the famine. It's a backlist title that I picked up for $0.99 for my Kindle.

  13. JenM, I haven't read either of those titles, and they both sound quite interesting! I'll look up Conor's Way right away. I haven't read anything but contemporary romances and contemporary fiction by Susan Wiggs. I need to look into her historical romances. Thank you for the recommendations. :D

  14. One of my favorite tropes is the "not gorgeous" and/or disabled hero or heroine and that's how I found The Charm School. Since you liked Courting Miss Hattie, I think you'll really like it. If you are interested in it, I'd be happy to send you my copy. I got it from PBS and I've got it listed for swap there, but it hasn't been claimed yet and I'm happy to send it to a new home.

  15. JenM, I also love the "plain Jane/Joe" protagonist. Thank you SO much for offering to send me your copy, that is just so generous of you! I would love to take if off your hands, LOL! Is your email available? If not you can send me an email at hilciasuarez@gmail.com.

    Thanks again!

  16. Hope your thanksgiving was awesome!

I really really enjoyed Courting Miss Hattie too. :P I have been buying PMs books but haven't read another one. I'm horrible. LOL

  17. Ames, I had a wonderful Thanksgiving, thank you!

Oh well, I've read THREE whole books now, lol! So don't feel too bad. I'm in the process of reading the fourth now. I'm in the mood for some Americana again. I'll probably "hit" Lavyrle Spencer next -- I have a few of her books in my TBR too. :)

  18. What Spencers are you going to read? I've got Twice Loved in my tbr pile...and there was another one I wanted to try...Years? I think. But yeah, that's an author I've never read yet.

  19. Ohhh, I loved, loved Years! There's a mini review here somewhere, together with Morning Glory. I read (and absolutely LOVED) The Endearment -- also reviewed it and highly recommend it. I still have Twice Love, Spring Fancy and The Hellion. I'm not sure which one I'll pick up yet. Let's see which one "calls" to me. *g*
