Post Sandy...

Hey there! First, thanks to those who checked to make sure my family and I were okay through the craziness that was Sandy!

It was an incredible storm, and thankfully we are all safe and quite lucky! My husband and I rode it out at home and except for a few small instances when the lights blinked off and on, didn't lose power throughout the whole experience. The scariest moments came from the winds buffeting our building from three sides and feeling as if the couch was being pushed through the living room wall.

Binghamton Ferry Restaurant
Frankly we were more concerned about our family members than ourselves. My sister in law who is due to have a baby any minute, and didn't have but one contraction, thankfully! My husband and daughter work by the Hudson River and had to go to work in the middle of that madness, in and out of a flood zone, so I was a bit of a wreck for a while... but all was well. That picture I'm including is a historical ferry/restaurant right down the street from where one of my brothers lives in Edgewater, NJ. Do you see a parking lot anywhere? One of my nieces is still stuck with her boyfriend in Hoboken where the streets are flooded, but thankfully she's also safe.

Lives, homes, and livelihoods have been lost up and down the East Coast, so we are some of the lucky ones.  My thoughts are with those who have lost so much!

  1. Hilcia,

I'm so happy to hear that you and yours have been safe throughout. I'm sure it was pretty scary at times.

That picture - wow. I see no parking lot and no bottom to that ferry. Poor owners!

    1. Tracy, thank you! It was scary... I've been through some hurricanes before (when I was a child), but it has been a long time! The worst for me was worrying about family.

That ferry/restaurant! It's a historical site.. very old. :( The ferry is docked by a long parking lot!

    1. Phyl, thank you. We were SO lucky! We are still a bit disoriented up here... the Jersey Shore! Phyl! I'm sure you've been there. It's heart breaking. :(

  5. Hey Hils,
I heard you were okay from our protective nath who was emailing her NJ girls as soon as Sandy came through--I am SO glad that you and Mariana [and all your loved ones] are okay. How is the power situation by you, in general? It's pretty bad around here.. I am operating as a charging station for my friends. Hot meals, showers, laundry, ice, etc. It feels good to be able to do something to help others.. even if so small. And because so few areas of electricity, gas stations cannot pump gas and those who are operating, have no more! It's crazy.

Omgosh. I just texted Natalie while typing this and she has no power at her house (but they are all okay!) and has been online at the gas station since 6 am this morning near us! It is now 9:07am!!!

    1. Hey Christine!

I heard you were doing okay from Nath too! LOL! And from Mariana, we emailed each other and she told me you also had power. The three of us were lucky! But, I asked about Natalie and she didn't know! I thought she was ok and that you were in touch with her... now I feel awful that we didn't know!!

I have power and Vanessa has power, but our cell phones are a mess... we have no cellular service for phone calls only for texting in some areas (my emails are not being transferred to my phone either). Vanessa is serving as the shower, laundry, ice service station for many of her co-workers and friends, and I'm serving as telephone central since I'm the only one with an actual landline around!

I left home yesterday to go to the office and that was crazy. We have power, but not many people around us do, so there are no traffic lights and no cops available to direct traffic. Most businesses are closed, but there were many people out there driving and walking! Gawking is more like it. Anyway, around here there's a sort of curfew going on after dark. It's scary. Gas lines are HUGE, there's no gas for cars and people are fighting for it at the moment.

I'm actually working from home today... retrieving messages and making some phone calls, but not much else. All Courts are closed until Monday and most attorneys' offices are closed anyway, so it makes sense. I think most people around here are a bit punch drunk and/or in shock.

  6. Glad to hear you guys made it through OK! So scary, and even people as far inland as Ohio got hit with damage.

    1. Wendy, thank you! I was amazed at the scope of that storm! It reached west, south and north to Canada all at the same time! So much destruction!

  7. Hilcia!

I'm so happy to hear that you and your family survived this horrible storm. It's been breaking my heart to watch the devastation particularly the Shore where I'm from :'( I've been able to communicate with some of my friends via text, well until their cells phones died...I imagine most are still without power along the Shore. I feel so helpless being clear across the country! Thank you for sharing what it's like in your neck of the woods. My thoughts are with you all. Stay safe!

    1. Negine! The Shore!! It's a heartbreaker. :(

Power here won't really be up until Monday (in some places), but they are working hard to restore it. Cell phone usage is also iffy. Lots of towers fell because of the winds! I can text sporadically, but I can't make phone calls. So, give your friends time... particularly if they are in South Jersey. My boss tried to get to Seaside Heights where she has two homes and couldn't get in... she still doesn't know if either home is standing. :(

    1. Thank you, Nath! Now we are just trying to get back to normal! It's going to take a while.

That baby! She still hasn't made her big entrance! She's due TODAY! Let's see if she decides to come out and meet us. *g*
