It's interesting that a lot of those books were required reading for me, yet I don't remember them as such-- at all! I'm still shaking my head Blume.

I did notice that some of the books Challenged were also banned at some schools or libraries in Canada, not nationally but in some districts.Hilciahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17765831808358693421noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1444239480570451270.post-10532432660066698222010-09-30T19:35:16.015-04:002010-09-30T19:35:16.015-04:00I went through the lists and, as you, have read pr...I went through the lists and, as you, have read probably more than half the books listed as banned, and several when I was young and/or read in school. I am completely stunned at some of the books that are on those lists - Steinbeck??? Huxley??? Angelou??? Blume???

I was fortunate in that my parents never policed what I read, ever. They may not have agreed with some of my book choices but they considered reading a means of opening doors and education.

I'm vehemently opposed to censorship and always have been. Parents do have the responsibility to oversee what their children read, however, books in general should not be banned for the broader society.

Unfortunately, we also have a banned book list in Canada: http://www.freedomtoread.ca/default.aspIndigenehttp://cboy-junkie.livejournal.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1444239480570451270.post-61813930211311644472010-09-30T10:23:38.357-04:002010-09-30T10:23:38.357-04:00Nath, yes! It doesn't make sense to me, but then my mind doesn't work that way.

Leslie, you know? You don't miss what you don't have at the time. It's later that you realize how much you've missed, and that's the sad part. I also hope that's the case. :)

Those lists always surprise me too! It boggles the mind, and the reasoning behind some of the challenges.Hilciahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17765831808358693421noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1444239480570451270.post-525150144039187132010-09-29T22:43:18.859-04:002010-09-29T22:43:18.859-04:00Growing up with weekly trips to the town library, ...Growing up with weekly trips to the town library, access to the school library and visits from the Bookmobile (loved the Bookmobile) I can't imagine what it was like to have your reading choices so severely restricted. I hope someday that won't always be the case.

Every year when I read the lists of banned/challenged books I'm always surprised at what is on there. I've read quite a few on the lists & so has Abby and we're both decent human beings. :)Lesliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12055116610295076439noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1444239480570451270.post-16896602756971272562010-09-29T19:43:25.091-04:002010-09-29T19:43:25.091-04:00I have to say, I'm not aware if in Canada, the...I have to say, I'm not aware if in Canada, there's a banned books list, but you know what surprises me? The reasons why these books are banned. Most of them seems to be because they contain real, pertinent issues of life! I mean, seriously?!?nathhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02626894830238717124noreply@blogger.com
